A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
