Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
